The Volkswagen Golf Mk4 Variant were introduced in 1999. It was discontinued in 2006, and succeeded in 2007 by the Volkswagen Golf Mk5 Variant. Unlike the Mk3, it was offered in North America where the Jetta name, tail lights, and front sheetmetal were used. In many European markets both Golf Variant (with Golf front) and Bora Variant (with Jetta front) were sold.

Facelifted Golf Variant
A facelifted variant (MK6) model was introduced in 2009, despite carrying the front fascia and interior styling from the new Golf, the underpinnings are based on its fifth generation predecessor. There was a "Golf Variant Concept R" showcar unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
