Development and assembly
The first Audi A5 DTM chassis was assembled in June 2011, with the first vehicle completed in August. Codenamed R17, the Audi A5 DTM is a race car designed for the DTM beginning in year 2012, replacing the Audi A4 DTM (required since 2004 season) would be permanently retired after 2011 season. Zylon and Rohacell construction of the sides of the car are in place to absorb side-impact damage from walls, cars, or other obstacles. The fuel tank is also integrated into the carbon fiber monocoque for greater safety and reduced fire risk. Audi A5 DTM was revealed at Frankfurt Motor Showon September 12, 2011. The homologation of the A5 DTM was scheduled for March 1, 2012.
It includes a V8 engine rated at 340 kW (462 PS; 456 hp) with 6-speed transmission (from previous A4 DTM car), pneumatically operated using paddle shifters in the steering wheel, engine electronics (Bosch MS 5.1) and the central display from Audi R8 LMS, larger and wider tires from Hankook, 32-gallons safety fuel tank inside carbon fiber cell, and a larger rear wing. The prototype was built by Audi Sport in Ingolstadt.
Chassis
The Audi A5 DTM was built to supersede the Audi A4 race car, a chassis was made directly connected to the carbon fibre monocoque is a roll cage of high-strength steel; CFRP crash elements on the side, front and rear.
Weight
At the beginning of the 2012 season, homologation rules for DTM cars were changed, an increase in minimum weight from 1,050 kg (2,315 lb) to 1,110 kg (2,447 lb) was mandated.
Engines
Unlike most racing cars competing in the DTM Touring Cars, the RS5 is powered by a Naturally-aspirated engines and 2xDOHC camshafts. The engine itself is a custom-built Audi 4.0 L V8 made of four valves per cylinder, air restricted to 2 x 28 mm by regulations, 90 degree V-angle. Audi RS5 DTM car has power output approximately 500 hp (373 kW; 507 PS) and torque 500 Nm (370 lbft). Audi RS5 DTM's engine position is front engined and longitudinally mounted. Audi RS5 DTM engine is Fuel injected delivery and has 9,000 rpm rev. Audi RS5 DTM's ECU is Bosch Motronic MS 5.1 and other components such as CDI ignition who supplied by Audi/Abt Sportsline.
Debut
The Audi A5 DTM's race debut was at the 2012 Hockenheimring DTM round on April 29, 2012. Audi Sport Team Abt's Mattias Ekström won the pole only.
Teams and drivers
In the 2012 DTM season lined-up eight drivers on for three teams. Mattias Ekström, Timo Scheider, Adrien Tambay and Rahel Frey start for Abt Sportsline. Phoenix Racing approached with Miguel Molina and Mike Rockenfeller. Filipe Albuquerque and Edoardo Mortara raced for Team Rosberg.
In the 2013 DTM season lined-up eight drivers on for four teams. Mattias Ekström and Jamie Green start for Abt Sportsline. Mike Rockenfeller and Miguel Molina for Phoenix Racing. Timo Scheider and Adrien Tambay start for Audi Sport Team Abt. Filipe Albuquerque and Edoardo Mortara start for Team Rosberg.
RS5 DTM
The Audi RS5 DTM is a facelift version of Audi A5 DTM. Still codenamed R17, Audi RS5 DTM was revealed at 2013 International Motor Show at Geneva on March 6, 2013. Like its predecessor, the RS5 uses a Normally-aspirated engine but with a same capacity of 4.0 litres and in a V8 configuration. It is a limited (300 units) version of Audi A5 Coupé for European market, celebrating the success of Audi works driver Mike Rockenfeller winning 2013 DTM season. It included a choice of 4 engines (2.0 TDI quattro (177 PS (130 kW)), 3.0 TDI quattro (245 PS (180 kW)), 2.0 TFSI quattro (225 PS (165 kW)), 3.0 TFSI quattro (272 PS (200 kW))), a choice of 3 body colours (Misano red, Daytona gray and Glacier white), DTM badges on the door sill trims, the fenders and the side sills; fixed rear wing in body color, exterior mirrors in aluminum look, 20-inch cast aluminum wheels in 5 V-spoke design.
The vehicle went on sale in 2013-10-21.
On March 4, 2014, Audi RS5 DTM launched again during 2014 Geneva Motor Show and codenamed as RC3.
Debut
Audi RS5 DTM's first debut during DTM preseason test at Circuit de Catalunya on March 26–28, 2013 by all Audi teams and drivers.
The Audi RS5 DTM's race debut was at the 2013 Hockenheimring DTM round on May 5, 2013. Audi Sport Team Abt's Timo Scheider won the pole only.
